As October is Respect Life month, we began our discussion this week by first talking about what the meaning of respect and life are, separately. Their ideas of respect included: showing respect by not saying bad or hurtful words, listening to the person speaking, and obeying our parents and teachers. Some examples of life that they came up with included: animals, plants, Americans, Japanese people, babies, narwhals and Santa. Then we focused on how we show respect for babies, the elderly, people who are sick or disabled, as well as our families and ourselves. Next week we will deepen our understanding of how we can respect babies.
Our second grade stars thuroughly enjoyed The Tiger Rising. It was an emotional story that brough two unlikely friends together and rebuilt the bond between a father and son. We're moving on to a new chapter book called Frindle. It's more light hearted and I know the class will enjoy hearing about the mischief that the main character, Nick, will get into!
The virtue of the month is Peace. I introduced our stars to an old song called, "I'd like to teach the world to sing." We also made peace doves.
With the end of the quarter coming, the class has been working hard on showing what they have learned across all subjects. I am proud of their work and look forward to their continued growth!
Also, the class has been working together to reach a combined goal of earning 250 ClassDojo points. Lucky them, they earned 265! I will have a nice little treat for them on Monday.
All my best,
Ms. King
